Prepare for Session 4: Practicing Scripture in Daily Life

In Session 4 of The Dialogue, we will build on our previous conversation about receiving God’s Word by considering how Scripture becomes part of daily life with God. Our guiding question will be:

How can God’s Word become part of my daily life with him?

Main Scripture

Joshua 1:8, NKJV

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

Session 4 Outline

In Joshua 1:8, God tells Joshua how to remain anchored as he leads God’s people forward. The Word is to stay near him, shape his thinking, and guide his obedience.

In this session, we will focus on a simple practice:

Read. Repeat. Reflect. Respond.

Read — Place God’s Word before you
We will consider how making time to read or hear Scripture gives God’s Word a regular place in our lives.

Repeat — Keep God’s Word near
We will consider how speaking, remembering, and carrying Scripture with us helps the Word remain close during the week.

Reflect — Meditate on the Word
We will look briefly at the Hebrew word hagah, which can carry the sense of murmuring, muttering, pondering, or speaking quietly.

Respond — Put the Word into practice
We will consider how Scripture leads us toward trust, obedience, prayer, worship, correction, and concrete steps of faithfulness.

We will also reflect on what Joshua 1:8 means by “prosperous” and “good success,” and why biblical success is not about using Scripture to control outcomes, but about walking faithfully in the way God gives us.

Prepare for Session 4: Practicing Scripture in Daily Life

Before the Session

Please read Joshua 1:8 slowly.

As you read, notice the movement of the verse:

The Word is in the mouth.
Joshua is told that the Book of the Law should not depart from his mouth.

The Word is in the meditation.
Joshua is told to meditate on it day and night.

The Word leads to obedience.
Joshua is told to observe to do according to all that is written in it.

Reflection Question

As you prepare for the session, consider this question:

What would it look like for God’s Word to become part of my daily life this week?

You may also want to ask:

What Scripture or phrase from God’s Word do I need to carry with me right now?

Prayer Before We Gather

Pray this simple prayer before Session 4:

Lord, help me live with your Word.

Teach me to read with attention, repeat with faith, reflect with humility, and respond with obedience.

Let your Word shape the way I think, speak, choose, and live.

Amen.
