Main Scripture

“This I recall to my mind,
Therefore I have hope.
Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.”
—Lamentations 3:21–23, NKJV

There are times when we need to remember. The present may not be easy. Questions may remain unanswered. Burdens may still be heavy. Yet we remember because God has been faithful before, and his past faithfulness helps us face the present with hope.

The book of Lamentations was written out of deep sorrow. It does not ignore grief, loss, disappointment, or devastation. Yet in the middle of lament, the writer says, “This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope.” Hope rises as he deliberately calls the mercies of the Lord to mind. God’s compassions have not failed. They are new every morning. The Lord is faithful.

Remembering God’s faithfulness does not mean pretending that life is easy. It means refusing to let pain, pressure, fear, or disappointment have the final word. It means looking back with honest eyes and saying, “The Lord has helped me before. He has carried me, made a way, and shown mercy.”

This week’s spiritual practice is simple: take time to remember one specific way God has been faithful to you.

You may recall a prayer God answered, a door he opened, a season he brought you through, a person he used to encourage you, a provision that came at the right time, or a moment when his Word strengthened you. Perhaps you were weak, but somehow you kept going. Perhaps you did not know what to do, but God gave wisdom. Perhaps your heart was heavy, but his mercy met you morning by morning.

This kind of remembering is more than nostalgia. It is an act of faith. It helps us interpret our present circumstances in light of God’s character. We are not simply remembering events; we are remembering the God who was present in those events. We are remembering his mercy, patience, provision, correction, comfort, and care.

Sometimes we forget because life moves quickly. Sometimes we forget because new troubles demand our attention. Sometimes we forget because pain can make the present feel larger than everything God has already done. That is why remembering must become a practice. We have to call certain truths back to mind.

The writer of Lamentations says, “This I recall to my mind.” That is intentional language. He does not wait for hope to appear on its own. He brings something back into focus. He chooses to remember what is true about God, and we can do the same.

We can pause and ask, “Where have I seen the Lord’s mercy in my life?” We can think about the people, moments, lessons, rescues, provisions, and quiet graces that bear witness to God’s faithfulness. We can write them down, speak them aloud, share them with someone, or turn them into prayer.

Remembering also strengthens gratitude. When we recall God’s faithfulness, we become more aware that we have not made it this far by ourselves. Our lives have been held by mercy. Our strength has been supplied. Our steps have been guided. Even when we did not understand everything, God was still present and working.

This does not mean every memory is simple. Some seasons were painful. Some stories are still tender. Some prayers were answered differently than we hoped. But even there, we may be able to see traces of grace. We may see that God sustained us, that we did not fall apart completely, that someone prayed, called, helped, listened, or stood with us, or that God gave enough strength for the next step.

Remembering God’s faithfulness can become a quiet anchor for the soul. It helps us say, “The same God who was merciful then is merciful now. The same God who sustained me then can sustain me now. The same God who was faithful then is faithful today.”

Try It This Week

Set aside a few minutes one day this week to remember God’s faithfulness.

You might use these simple steps:

  1. Sit quietly before God.
  2. Ask, “Lord, where have I seen your faithfulness in my life?”
  3. Choose one specific memory.
  4. Write down a few sentences about what happened.
  5. Name what God showed you through that moment.
  6. Turn the memory into a prayer of thanksgiving.
  7. Carry that reminder with you through the day.

You may also want to share the memory with someone who needs encouragement. A testimony does not have to be long or polished. Sometimes a simple word is enough: “God helped me through something, and I believe he can help you too.”

Reflection Question

What is one specific way God has shown his faithfulness in my life?

A Prayer for the Week

Lord, help me to remember your faithfulness.

When I am discouraged, remind me of your mercy. When I am anxious, remind me of your care. When I am tired, remind me of the strength you have given before. When I am uncertain, remind me that you have guided me in the past.

Thank you for the ways you have helped me, sustained me, corrected me, provided for me, and carried me. Teach me not to forget your goodness. Let the memory of your faithfulness give me hope for today.

Great is your faithfulness.

Amen.

Closing Thought

This week, take time to remember. Look back with gratitude. Recall one way God has been faithful, and let that memory strengthen your hope. The Lord’s mercies have carried you before, and his compassions are new every morning.
