Main Scripture:

“Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.”
—Psalm 42:11, NKJV

Many of us move through life without pausing to notice what is happening inside us. We know what is on our calendar. We know what needs to be done. We know who is waiting for a response. But we may not always know what is happening in our soul before God. Sometimes the soul is weary. Sometimes it is anxious. Sometimes it is grateful, restless, joyful, discouraged, numb, or in need of correction. If we never pause to pay attention, we may carry these things without naming them. They may shape our words, decisions, relationships, and prayers without our awareness.

This week’s spiritual practice is simple: pause once each day and ask, “What is happening in my soul before God?”

Paying attention to your soul can help you notice what is happening beneath the surface before it quietly shapes your reactions, words, and decisions. Psalm 42 gives us language for this kind of honest attention. The psalmist asks, “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me?” He is not ignoring his inner life. He is not pretending that everything is fine. He is paying attention to the condition of his soul before God.

This is not self-absorption. It is spiritual honesty. Paying attention to the soul helps us notice what needs care, correction, comfort, or renewed hope. It helps us recognize places of fear, fatigue, resentment, gratitude, longing, or need. It also gives us an opportunity to speak truth to ourselves in the presence of God: “Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him.”

This practice is closely connected to wholeness. God does not only care about our outward behavior. He cares about the heart, the mind, the body, the will, the emotions, and the hidden places where our lives are being formed. When we pay attention to the soul before God, we are learning to bring our whole selves into his light and care.

What This Practice Is

Paying attention to your soul is the practice of pausing before God to notice and name what is happening within you.

It may involve naming an emotion, recognizing a burden, noticing a desire, admitting weariness, giving thanks, or acknowledging something that has been shaping your heart. The goal is not to analyze yourself endlessly. The goal is to become more aware of your soul before the Lord.

This practice can be especially helpful when you feel hurried, irritated, spiritually dry, overwhelmed, or unsure why you are reacting strongly to something. A short pause can help you notice what is going on beneath the surface and respond with greater honesty, wisdom, and trust.

Try It This Week

Once each day, pause and ask:

What is happening in my soul before God?

You might try this simple pattern:

  1. Find a quiet moment.
  2. Take a slow breath.
  3. Ask, “Lord, what is happening in my soul before you?”
  4. Notice what rises to the surface.
  5. Name it simply.
  6. Ask the Lord for what you need: mercy, wisdom, strength, correction, comfort, or renewed hope.

You might notice something like:

“Lord, I am more tired than I realized.”

“Lord, I feel anxious about what is ahead.”

“Lord, I am grateful for how you helped me today.”

“Lord, I have been carrying resentment.”

“Lord, I feel distant, but I want to draw near.”

“Lord, help me hope in you again.”

A Few Words You Might Notice

As you pause, you may notice words such as:

  • weary
  • anxious
  • grateful
  • restless
  • discouraged
  • hopeful
  • resentful
  • peaceful
  • numb
  • hungry for God

Do not rush past what you notice. Name it simply before the Lord and ask him what you need. Some days, you may notice something quickly. Other days, the answer may not be clear. That is okay. The practice is not about forcing an insight. It is about creating space for honest awareness before God.

Reflection Question

As you practice paying attention to your soul, ask yourself:

What has been shaping my reactions, words, or decisions lately?

You may discover a concern, a disappointment, a joy, a temptation, a question, or a place where you need God’s help.

A Prayer for the Week

Lord, help me pay attention to my soul before you.

Search me with mercy.
Show me what I need to notice.
Give me courage to be honest in your presence.
When I am weary, strengthen me.
When I am anxious, steady me.
When I am grateful, teach me to give thanks.
When I need correction, lead me with grace.

Help me hope in you again and bring my whole life before you.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Closing Thought

This week, take a few moments each day to notice what is happening in your soul before God. You do not have to hide, rush, or pretend. The Lord meets us in truth, and he is able to care for what we notice in his presence.
